HIROSHIMA/NAGASAKI "Hippy Terrorist '" read the sign of the solo counter-protester, pointing across the road. It was an odd anachronism for the pacifist, mostly clean-cut crew who spent 3-1/2 days - Hiroshima to Nagasaki days - vigiling for peace outside the gate of Offutt Air Force Base. The handful of vigilers swelled to sixty on Saturday, August 7, when Speak Out at StratCom and Nebraskans For Peace joined in a Farewell To Arms Rally at the home of the Strategic (StratCom) and Military Space Commands near Omaha. At 11 a.m. Monday, August 9, the hour of the bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, Elton Davis crossed the line into Offutt Air Force Base, seeking to pray at the base chapel. He was briefly detained by Air Force security, then released with a letter barring him from the base. On October 1, he was charged in federal court with trespass. Greg Boertje-Obed has begun serving a three month prison sentence for trespass at Offutt. On August 25, Boertje-Obed and Paul Gallagher were the last of the eight Catholic Workers who crossed the line at Offutt last March to be sentenced in federal court in Omaha. Gallagher received one year unsupervised probation. Boertje-Obed received the only prison sentence among the eight when he refused the terms of probation offered.
