BANDAZHEVSKY NOW AT PENAL COLONY
The situation of imprisoned Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky of Belarus has greatly improved. Bandazhevsky's medical research into the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe led in 2001 to an eight year prison sentence on bogus corruption charges. Ill for some time, his health had already begun to improve when on May 29, 2004, he was "relegated" from prison to a penal colony.
He has been assigned a private cottage where he can be visited by family and others including foreign journalists. Supporters hope to provide a computer and internet access so he can resume his work as soon as possible. Two amnesties to reduce prison populations have cut Bandazhevsky's sentence to six years, and after serving half, he can be paroled. This is expected at the end of December, 2004.
