Alliant Action's roots date to resistance to the Vietnam War, and the Honeywell Project's opposition to that Minnesota-based war profiteer. In time, ammunition maker Alliant Tech spun of from Honeywell, and Alliant Action, successor to the Honeywell Project, has vigiled weekly for about nine years and promotes civil resistance at a factory near the Twin Cities.
A notable legal victory was won last October when a Hennepin County jury acquitted 19 people charged with trespassing at Alliant Tech on April 2, 2003. Among the defendants were four who offered first-hand testimony of their recent visits to Iraq and the impact of the DU munitions, and the sister of a deceased Marine, whose aggressive leukemia - believed to be due in part to his DU exposure during combat clean-up duty - in 1995 left his wife a widow with two young children. The activists argued that international law legitimized their action, and they convinced their six peers. Twenty-eight people had been arrested at the April protest - one charge was dismissed, and eight others had earlier pled guilty to a petty misdemeanor.
The week after the acquittal, on October 18, six more people were arrested, crossing the line to oppose the radioactive bullets. Local prosecutors dropped the charges in February, just as trial was to begin.
