Peltier
|
The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in December turned down Native American political prisoner Leonard Peltier's request for a reduction of sentence, without addressing the merits of his sentencing. Peltier still has an appeal pending in the Tenth Circuit, against the U.S. Parole Commission's refusal to reconsider his parole application until 2008.
At the end of February, 2003, Leonard Peltier issued a statement detailing the deterioration of his defense committee in the months following President Clinton's rejection of executive clemency in January, 2001. The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee (LPDC) has recently been reorganized at the prisoner's behest, resuming examination of tens of thousands of FBI documents related to his prosecution and released under the Freedom of Information Act, and securing some that continue to be withheld.
Peltier's statements about the changes in the LPDC can be
found on the Committee's new web site, www.freeleonardpeltier.org.
