- Pentagon & White House

The Atlantic Life Community gathered for two one-day retreats to commemorate the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. On August 6, Hiroshima Day, the group was unable to approach the Pentagon for any public witness for peace near the building. Two men were arrested when they approached too near to the war palace with their peace banner. They were cited and quickly released.

Three days later, on Nagasaki Day, as temperatures reached 100° in Washington, D.C., a die-in on the White House sidewalk was not immediately broken up by police. Seven prostrate pacifists baked on the pavement for longer than anticipated before police hauled them away to issue citations for "stationary demonstrating" where only protest in motion is permitted.

Court dates are pending. For more information, contact Jonah House, 1301 Moreland Ave., Baltimore, MD 21216, (410)233-6238 or Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, 503 Rock Creek Church Rd. NW, Washington, DC 20010, (202)882-9649.
