The annual Lenten Desert Experience began on the weekend following Ash Wednesday with a program in Las Vegas. This first weekend of events concluded with about ten people witnessing at the gates of the Nevada nuclear weapons test site on Sunday, February 17. Five crossed the line and were arrested, cited for trespass and released.
More small vigils at the gate in the following weeks urged workers to "Give up nukes for Lent" and "Stop subcritical nuclear testing."
This year over 30 people from six states joined the annual Holy Week walk from the Las Vegas Department of Energy (DOE) office out to the Test Site. They arrived on Good Friday, March 29, welcomed by Western Shoshone spiritual leader Corbin Harney and greeted by dozens more activists on hand for the Nuclear Stations of the Cross liturgy, prepared by the Las Vegas Catholic Worker community.
The liturgy concluded at the test site gate, where 31 people crossed the line. They were held for about an hour, cited and released.
