King's Anti-War Message
Proclaimed -Project E.L.F.

Recalling that Dr. King said that "war is the enemy of the poor," six peace activists were ticketed for trespassing January 20 at the Navy's controversial Project ELF submarine transmitter near Clam Lake, Wisconsin.

All are members of the Chicago-based Christian Peacemaker Teams, which sends volunteers to trouble spots around the world to help reduce violence.

Project ELF (for 'extremely low frequency') sends one-way signals to submerged nuclear-armed and fast attack submarines around the world. Dozens of protests at the ELF site since the end of the Cold War have brought thousands to the site, deep in the Chequamegon National Forest, and resulted in more than 575 arrests. "ELF was built as a foil against the former Soviet fleet and to help wage a nuclear war," said John LaForge, an organizer with Nukewatch. "ELF's function makes it illegal and immoral," he said.

About 30 people rallied at the site for this 10th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday protest .

Those ticketed and ordered to appear in federal district court in Madison were Carol and Charles Spring, Genie and Bill Durland, and Sis and Jerry Levin. Levin was CNN's Middle East Bureau Chief in Lebanon, where he was held hostage for one year in 1984.
