-Mordechai Vanunu |
Recent television documentaries and newspaper articles in Israel - cleared by government censors - reveal more about that country's nuclear weapons than Mordechai Vanunu shared with the London Sunday Times in 1986. But authorities insist that he remains a security risk, and have refused to parole or pardon the prisoner.
Vanunu's message of nuclear abolition in the Middle East and around the world is being heard by an increasing number of supporters in many countries. At the end of September, vigils demanding his immediate and unconditional release were held at Israeli embassies and consulates, as well as other locations, in Canada, the U.S., England, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Israel, India, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.
A recent visit from Nick and Mary Eoloff, his adoptive parents from the U.S., and a first time visit from the Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem and the Dean of Jerusalem's St. George's Cathedral, bring news that Vanunu is in good health and spirits. And he remains steadfast in his belief that he did the right thing in telling the world about Israel's secret nuclear arsenal.
