Grafitti at Nuclear Base
Earns Fine for
French Abolitionist
French nuclear abolitionist Serge Levillayer was convicted August 28 of trespass at the Cherbourg shipyards where France builds its nuclear missile submarines. He wrote the conclusion of the 1996 International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on nuclear weapons in chalk on the sidewalk there. A week later, the same court convicted him of trespass and another charge for his second visit inside the shipyard, when he spray painted the same quote. He was fined 1,000 francs. The actions took place during Levillayer's monthly vigils at the site in August and November, 2000.
