Peltier Campaign Update
Leonard Peltier is the United States' most widely known political prisoner. On the very day in 1975 when the two FBI agents were killed, whose deaths led to Peltier's imprisonment, the corrupt tribal leader on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Dickie Wilson, was in Washington, D.C., to secretly sign away the tribe's mineral rights to uranium and fossil fuels in the sacred Black Hills. This further theft of the Black Hills was assisted by a corrupt FBI.

Peltier's supporters are now asked to urge Congress to declassify 6000 documents being withheld by the FBI and to hold investigations into the case. A new informational brochure has been prepared to facilitate renewed educational outreach about Peltier's case, so that when new evidence can be brought before the court, a renewed network is prepared to support Peltier's freedom.

Also, the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee (LPDC) is encouraging supporters to join the opposition to new federal prisoner phone access restrictions, which limit prisoners to 300 minutes per month (particularly challenging for friends and families struggling to maintain contact, appellants consulting with attorneys, and any prisoner preparing for a successful release). An e-mail listserve has been established to link opponents to the new phone regulations. LPDC staff will be visiting Peltier twice weekly to make up for the lack of telephone conversation. Reporters are still not permitted to visit, and telephone interviews are limited.
