The trial of the Jubilee Ploughshares will commence at Chelmsford Crown Courts on Monday, May 21. Fr. Martin Newell of St. Margaret's Parish, Canning Town, and Susan van der Hijden of the Amsterdam Catholic Worker community have been in prison since their November 3 disarmament of a nuclear weapons convoy vehicle at RAF Wittering base.
Martin has been moved to Belmarsh Prison in London and Susan has been moved to High Point near Cambridge. Letters of support should be sent to their prison or support addresses, at right.
A series of support gatherings across southern England are planned through April and into May. The retrial of Rosie James and Rachel Wenham has again been postponed, this time until April 30. The women boarded a Trident nuclear submarine in the Barrow shipyards to begin disarming it in February, 1999, and faced two counts each of criminal damage. A protracted trial last year resulted in their acquittal on one count, and a hung jury on the second charge.
