Bangor Sub Base

Four people were arrested on the morning of August 9 for blocking the road to the Trident Submarine Base at Bangor, Washington. They stepped from the group of 60 demonstrators and held a long banner, stopping the flow of morning traffic into the Bangor base. The banner read: 'Bangor Closed-Trident Violates International Law!'

The 60 came to the Bangor base to remember all nuclear weapons victims and to demand a stop to continued preparations for nuclear war, including a stop to the proposed D-5 nuclear missile upgrade at Bangor.

The four were arrested by Kitsap County Sheriff's deputies for disorderly conduct and soon released, pending citation. A citation for a traffic offense (misdirecting traffic with an official-looking sign) arrived in the mail later, directing the four to respond to the court by September 29 or face a larger fine.

County prosecutors lost last year's protest case when a judge and jury accepted the demonstrators' international law defense.
