As she explains in her letter from jail, Michele Naar-Obed was sentenced for openly resisting her parole restrictions that included compulsory exile from her home. She was arrested at Jonah House June 21, and allowed to self-surrender in Norfolk the following day. There she was jailed until sentencing when she refused to post $50,000 bail and would not agree to avoid public protest, talk shows or speaking at any other public forum; live at a residence approved by the court; turn in her passport to the court; report in person twice a week; and associate only with law-abiding persons. The judge called her a danger to the community.

With such restrictions on her life outside prison, Naar-Obed, like the recently released Puerto Rican political prisoners, has more freedom of speech and association behind bars. She was sentenced to the maximum 12 months permitted and will be free of all restrictions when out next summer. Naar-Obed participated in the Jubilee Plowshares East action, disarming a fast-attack submarine at Newport News [VA] Shipbuilding on Aug. 7, 1995. She was convicted and paroled from prison in Nov. 1997, after serving an 18 month sentence. support action Naar-Obed is designated for a federal prison, so may soon be in transit from a Virginia jail.
