2,400 Arrests Calling for CEASEFIRE NOW

Jewish Voice for Peace photo

From the Nuclear Resister

When the long-simmering war between Hamas and the state of Israel exploded into a rolling boil on October 7, demands for a ceasefire quickly dominated demonstrations around the world.

Following is a day-by-day chronicle of more than 2,400 arrests in the first two months since then, at more than 75 demonstrations across 22 states and provinces in the United States and Canada. It marks the largest surge of anti-war arrests since mid-April, 2003, when the Nuclear Resister chronicled over 7,500 anti-war arrests in the U.S. alone in the lead-up to and first weeks of the second U.S. invasion of Iraq.

CODEPINK activists disrupt warhawk cabinet at budget hearing

“NO MORE MONEY FOR THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX”

On the afternoon of May 16, CODEPINK activists disrupted a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C. featuring the Secretaries of Defense, Commerce, and State. The hearing, called “A Review of the President’s Fiscal Year 24 Budget Request: Investing in U.S. Security, Competitiveness, and the Path Ahead for the U.S.-China Relationship,” prioritized war preparations over de-escalation and cooperation.

Three of the activists wore t-shirts saying “China is Not Our Enemy.” Wearing a shirt and holding a sign that both read “$$$ FOR THE POOR NOT WAR,” CODEPINK organizer Olivia DiNucci stood up and said, “We don’t need more money for the military industrial complex. We need money for the poor and the planet!”

Fr. Carl Kabat, plowshares activist and priest, dies at age 88

Roman Catholic priest and decades-long Plowshares activist and nuclear resister, Fr. Carl Kabat, OMI, died on August 4, 2022 at age 88.

We met Carl for the first time in 1983 while in line to be searched at the D.C. Jail to visit Helen Woodson – we were on our way in just as he was leaving after visiting with her. It was always good to see him over the years: in the visiting room of a Colorado prison where he was locked up; at the 30th anniversary gathering and action for the Plowshares Eight, Nukewatch and the Nuclear Resister in Tennessee; at an action at the Kansas City nuclear weapons plant; at the trial of the Transform Now Plowshares.

Eight arrested after two hours of blockading construction traffic to stop new Pratt & Whitney plant

Reject Raytheon AVL shuts down Pratt & Whitney

by Ken Jones
It was an Earth Day to remember. On a beautiful sunny spring day, our local citizen coalition Reject Raytheon in Asheville, North Carolina pulled off a three-part demonstration for the protection of the earth and earthlings and against the U.S. military-industrial complex. We rallied, we paraded, and we took direct action.
The event on Friday, April 22, began at 10 a.m. in the Bent Creek River Park, on the banks of the French Broad River. The park sits exactly next to the new bridge being built for the 1.2 million square foot Pratt & Whitney plant and in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Parkway bridge over the river. Across the river from the park is a dirt road, called Old River Road, that provides access to the many trucks coming and going from the plant every day. On this morning, it was busy, full of power and commerce.

~ from FCI Otisville, by nuclear resister Carmen Trotta

January 2021 I am in the “Satellite Camp” of the Otisville prison. I never asked for the camp and I was very surprised that I was assigned there. The camp is a very low security prison, and it has some benefits (this is the prison camp that Michael Cohen spent his limited time in). I […]
