Catholic Worker gathering ends with actions at Creech drone base and nuclear test site

On Sunday, October 9, 120 people from 17 U.S. states plus Mexico, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands concluded a Catholic Worker gathering in Las Vegas with protests at the nearby Nevada National Security Site (NNSS, formerly known as the Nevada nuclear test site) and Creech Air Force Base. A morning liturgy was held in the desert just outside of the main entrance to the nuclear test site. Afterwards, the group carried signs, banners and colorful painted butterflies down the road to the gate. Thirty-one of the activists crossed onto NNSS property and were arrested for trespass. They were soon cited and released.

The group then caravanned down Highway 95 to Creech Air Force Base, a center for U.S. drone warfare operations. While an activist marching band played, and supporters held signs nearby, thirteen Catholic Workers from across the U.S. blockaded the main entrance of the base. They held signs reading “Killer Drones: Illegal and Immoral” and others with the names of civilians who have been killed by U.S. drone attacks. They were charged with unlawful assembly and taken to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.  All were released late that night or the next day.

Australian peace pilgrims arrested at Pine Gap

Early on Thursday morning, September 29, five Australian peace pilgrims walked on to the Pine Gap U.S. military base at Alice Springs, to lament the death caused by the base and to resist the violence that is perpetrated there. Jim Dowling, Margaret Pestorius, Andy Paine, Tim Webb and Franz Dowling walked through the countryside late at night until they arrived at the base’s perimeter fence, where police were patrolling with spotlights.  The group played an elegy with viola and guitar while racing to the top of the hill.  They were soon arrested, locked in police vans and transported off the base.

Protesters block road into California drone base, four arrested

In the rainy, dark early morning hours of October 25, nine Northern California activists stood with large banners and blocked the main gate at Beale Air Force Base for over 30 minutes to protest the ongoing extrajudicial and secret U.S. drone killing program. With traffic backed up for over a mile, leaflets were handed to each driver. Toby Blomé, Pamela Osgood, Shirley Osgood and Mauro Oliveira crossed the base boundary line to express their grievances about the unlawful polices of drone assassinations that has led to the deaths of thousands of children, women and civilian men. They were handcuffed and detained for about an hour in the rain, charged with trespassing, and later released with a citation.
