Dear friends,
Today is election day in the U.S. But presidential elections do not distract us from the important work the Nuclear Resister continues to do year round, year after year. We know that whoever is elected, nonviolent resistance to nuclear weapons, nuclear power and war must continue. And after watching eight such contests come and go since the Nuclear Resister began in October of 1980, we are confident that the resistance will continue.
We are also certain that publishing the newsletter and expanding our outreach via blog, email and Facebook would not be possible without your vital support! We are deeply grateful to know that we can count on the generosity of your donations to help us continue reporting on these acts of conscience and encouraging support for imprisoned activists, bringing this news of resistance to thousands of people around the world.
Besides, we’re currently too busy to be distracted with elections or much else while in the midst of tiling the cracked and aging concrete office floor and painting the walls. We’ve published 111 out of 167 issues of the newsletter in this office, and while moving out the five file cabinets, three desks, cabinet, tall bookcase and more, we’ve dusted off more than a few inspiring and treasured relics.
Among them are a piece of the chainlink fence that surrounded the Greenham Common nuclear missile base in England, removed by Greenham women peace campers, and a hand-picked chip from the Berlin Wall, sent by a German subscriber. Protest posters, photos and buttons from more than three decades of struggle. Beautiful artwork and crafts made and sent to us by prisoners – including notecards from Helen Woodson and a ceramic mug from Susan Crane.
They are physical reminders of this vital, multi-generational resistance movement, and the journey we’ve been on together with so many of you to create a future free of nuclear power, nuclear weapons and war. Whatever we do to create change in the world, none of us do it alone.
With your support, we gather news from around the globe to tell clear, concise and comprehensive stories about arrests, court and imprisonment. Resistance continues at military bases, nuclear reactors and nuclear bomb plants in Korea, Scotland, India, France, England, the United States, Australia, Sweden, Finland, Germany and other places. Activists in communities around the world tell us they find strength, inspiration and solidarity from reading the Nuclear Resister, and learning about, connecting with and supporting one another.
With care and respect, we offer support and give a voice to the imprisoned resisters. Over the past 32 years, that has included more than 1,000 people behind bars! Yes, we who work for peace and justice need to know who these imprisoned activists are, tell their stories, and support them.
The work of the Nuclear Resister is more than the day-to-day tasks like writing articles and finding out who is in or out of jail. For us, the work of the Nuclear Resister is one of love and faith and hope. It happens on a shoestring and a prayer. We do our best to not worry about money (not always easy!), and hope that what is needed will appear in the post office box (and sometimes via the donate feature on the Nuclear Resister blog!) with enough regularity that we can get the next issue out and cover the costs of related needs. Thank goodness for the family members who own the home we live in – a home that includes the Nuclear Resister office – and haven’t raised the rent in 24 years! And thank goodness for all of you.

We need to continue the resistance; we need to continue supporting one another; we need to keep our eyes on the prize!!!
