Hundreds of anti-nuclear power arrests in India

SEND A LETTER TO TOP INDIAN OFFICIALS

from Michael Mariotte, Nuclear Information and Resource Service
Dr. S.P. Udayakumar (Kumar to his friends, and I consider myself one of them) is a longtime leader in the peaceful resistance to nuclear power in India, as well as a leader in the NIRS/WISE international network. The Indian government has threatened to charge him with terrorism and “waging war” for his role in leading the nonviolent citizens movement against operation of the nearly-completed Kudankulam nuclear reactors in the Tamil Nadu section of southern India.
He is currently with 10,000 other people protesting near the reactor site. Some are on a hunger strike. Some 10,000 police have surrounded the protestors and reportedly are blocking the media from entering the area.

Jeju Island resistance heats up as blasting for naval base begins

WRITE TO THE JEJU ISLAND GOVERNOR AND SIGN THE PETITION

Despite growing condemnation at home and abroad, Korean navy contractors backed by hundreds of special police brought in from the mainland to repress local protest have for the last two weeks been dynamiting the unique volcanic coastline on Jeju Island to prepare the site for construction of a new navy base. The area near Gangjeong village is known as the Gureombi for its rounded rock forms that have long been regarded by locals as sacred. Scores of people – from local residents to church and NGO leaders and international observers – have been arrested, beaten, jailed and some deported during that time.

Two actions at Vandenberg Air Force Base result in arrests
February 25
The latest nuclear missile provocation came in the dark, with an unbeastly roar that pierced the chilly coastal fog in the wee hours of February 25.  A shimmering light rose above the clouds and arched over the Pacific Ocean, the incomparable threat to distant enemies reaffirmed.
Witnessing the latest midnight test flight of a first-strike Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile from the gate of Vandenberg Air Force Base was a group of nearly 100 demonstrators, the largest nuclear missile launch protest there in nearly 30 years.  Fifteen members of the group crossed from the designated protest area onto base property, where they were arrested for trespassing.

Women paint for peace at Glasgow recruiting office
Three women painted the windows of the Army recruiting office in Glasgow, Scotland on March 1 in protest at the dishonest propaganda used to persuade young people to join up.
At 8 a.m., Barbara Dowling and Leonna O’Neill painted in large colourful letters “DON’T JOIN UP. DON’T BELIEVE THE LYING ADVERTS”, “GUNS, BOMBS, TANKS? NO THANKS” and “NO TO WAR” on the windows of the Queen Street office.
