DECEMBER 1 – PRISONERS FOR PEACE DAY

Agent Orange widow and friend arrested protesting drones at Beale Air Force Base

On November 26, Chris Nelson and Shirley Osgood were arrested at Beale Air Force Base in California.  They wanted to deliver a letter to the commander expressing concerns about drone warfare.  After they were processed and released, they watched a Global Hawk drone take off from the base.

From Nelson’s letter:  “My husband Michael Pike died in September of Agent Orange related cancer. My husband was Special Forces in Vietnam and came to regret his role in the war and what the U.S. government did. I am here today in loving memory of that fine man to ask you to stop your role in the kill chain which uses the Northrup Grumman Global Hawk drone to identify human targets for extrajudicial execution. This is neither lawful (international and higher law) nor moral and you must know that. Horrible acts, like drone strikes, are leading to the atrocities we are seeing now. Inhumanity met with inhumanity.”

Two activists arrested at annual vigil to close Ft. Benning’s School of the Americas

Several thousand human rights activists converged at Ft. Benning in Georgia to call for an end to militarized state violence in the U.S. and abroad, and for the closure of the School of the Americas (SOA) housed at the base.  A solemn funeral procession commemorated those murdered at the hands of SOA graduates.

After the procession was over, 62-year-old Nashua Chantal carried a ladder over to the fence and was arrested after climbing onto base property.  Earlier that morning, 83-year-old Eve Tetaz was arrested after crossing into the base while carrying a poster of one of the 43 students disappeared in Ayotzinapa, Mexico this September. Both activists are scheduled to be in court for their arraignment on January 13.

Prisoners for Peace Day – December 1

December 1 is Prisoners for Peace Day.  For over 60 years, War Resisters’ International have, on this day, made known the names and stories of those imprisoned because of their actions for peace. Many are conscientious objectors, in gaol for refusing to join the military. Others have taken nonviolent actions to disrupt preparation for war.

This day is a chance for you to demonstrate your support for those individuals and their movements, by writing to those whose freedom has been taken away from them because of their work for peace.

Many thanks to the Jane Addams Peace Association Disarmament Fund for their recent grant to the Nuclear Resister, which primarily helped fund materials needed for participation in the Tucson All Soul’s Procession.  Our contingent remembered those who have died as a result of uranium mining, nuclear power, nuclear testing and nuclear weapons.  You can read more here.
