Support needed:  National call in day for prisoner of conscience Rafil Dhafir

URGENT – Support Needed:  National Call In Day for Prisoner of Conscience Rafil Dhafir.  MONDAY, AUGUST 4, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.  On June 18, Dr. Dhafir was moved to a special housing (isolation) unit at FMC Devens in Ayer, MA. The purpose of the national call in day is to get the warden to return Dr. Dhafir to the general population.

Fr. Carl Kabat arrested at nuclear weapons parts plant in Kansas City

Carl Kabat, 80, a priest in the Order of Mary Immaculate, splashed paint on the huge entry sign at the National Security Campus at 10 a.m. on July 4. He then sat by the sign, awaiting arrest. This was Kabat’s fourth July “interdependence action” in successive years at the new home for the Kansas City Plant (in Kansas City, Missouri), where the National Nuclear Security Administration now makes and procures non-nuclear parts for nuclear weapons.

Seven arrested at Hancock calling for an end to drone war crimes

On July 23, seven Atlantic Life Community activists were arrested after blocking the main gate of Hancock drone base in New York.  They affixed a People’s War Crimes Indictment to the fence.  The group was charged with trespass.  Clare Grady and Martha Hennessy were also charged with violating the order of protection granted to the base commander which had been given to many of those arrested at prior Hancock actions.  After a week in prison, five of them are now having bail reduction hearings, and two of the women have already been released.  All seven have an initial court hearing on August 6.

Nuclear weapons convoy in Scotland stopped by activists, four arrested

Just after midnight on July 11, a military vehicle convoy which included lorries carrying Trident nuclear bombs, passed through the center of Glasgow, Scotland. Four Faslane Peace campers were arrested when they blockaded the convoy for an hour close to Loch Lomond. One of the activists climbed atop the vehicles. The group spent the weekend in jail until an initial court appearance.

Two Irish legislators attempt inspection of U.S. military aircraft at Shannon Airport

Two independent TDs were arrested on the afternoon of July 22 at Shannon Airport.  Clare Daly and Mick Wallace were detained while attempting to inspect two U.S. military aircraft. Shannonwatch confirmed that the pair were on the tarmac, in a protest designed to highlight what they feel is lax inspection of U.S. military movements through the County Clare airport.

British nuclear weapons site blockade results in two arrests

 At six o’clock in the morning on July 25, a group of local people from Plymouth, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and beyond blocked the main Camels Head entrance into Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth, England in order to stop the refitting of the Vanguard nuclear submarines which carry and launch the Trident nuclear weapon missiles. People used their own bodies and banners, as well as a car, to block the entrance into the base. Theo Simon and Nikki Clark, who chained themselves to the car, were arrested after police cut the locks.

Hancock drone resister sentenced to one year in prison

On July 10, activist and grandmother Mary Anne Grady Flores was sentenced to the maximum one year in prison after being found guilty of violating an order of protection while taking photos at a nonviolent action at Hancock drone base in New York.  The order of protection was granted to the base commander and applied against a number of drone protesters who have been arrested at Hancock.  After spending a week in prison, Grady Flores was released on appeal.

We send warm greetings and many thanks to all who actively engage in the transformation of weapons of mass destruction to sustainable life-giving alternatives. Gregory Boertje-Obed (U.S. Penitentiary, Leavenworth, Kansas) Michael Walli (Federal Correctional Institution McKean, Bradford, Pennsylvania) and I are sending you some of our observations and concerns on the 2nd anniversary of our Transform Now Plowshares action.

On July 28, 2012, after thorough study of nuclear issues, and because of our deepening commitment to nonviolence, we engaged in direct action by cutting through four fences at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where the U.S. continues to overhaul and upgrade thermonuclear warheads.blockade.
